Hear from Daren Herring - aka The Flying Fish, Ex-UK, from Wales, who has called Australia home since January, 2004.
He will enter this year's AGL Rally SA Rally of the Heartland throughout the Goyder area.
Owner and CEO of MSSONLINE PTY LTD, MSS SAFETY, IKKLEFELLAS and Daren Herring Rallysport.
Just turned 53.
Lives in Kudla, near Gawler, with Gabby, my wtb, and our four cats, rocky, zara, molly and mittens.
I raced Moto-x from the age of 14 to 25, when I had too many injuries, I swapped to cars with the help of Gary Leece, multiple Isle of Man rally champion.
He, along with John Brown, got me a role as course car on the Manx International, I was pulled into race control at the end of day one and was asked to slow down a little and also... how come I didn't actually compete as I had set a top 15 stage time.
Just two months later I won first in class on the Cambrian Rally, my first ever gravel/forest event.
This was 1992.
For '93, we set up a program to include the Welsh National Championship, selected BRC rounds and the 'RAC' as we knew it, what is now Wales Rally GB, part of the WRC.
It was a good year, '93, all in what was basically a road going 2.0 ltr Vauxhall (Opel) Astra, Group N3, the showroom class.
For 1994, we built a brand new current spec group N3 astra for the BRC, finishing 7th F2 (front wheel drive) and 10th overall at our first attempt with no support from any manufacturer.
We had support from Michelin all year.
1993 - Welsh National F2 Rally Drivers Champion
1993 - ANWCC Forest Rally Champion - http://www.anwcc.co.uk/roll_of_honour.htm
1993 - Network Q RAC Rally (WRC) - retired day 2, fuel pump
1994 - Mobil 1 Top Gear British Rally Championship - F2 7th, 10th Overall - Grp N3 Astra
1995 - Competed only 2 rounds of BRC 19th o/a
2000 - BRC - Jim Clark 46th O/a A5 Nissan Micra - Guest Drive for Geoff Jones Motorsport
2019 - Adelaide Rally - December, 2019 - Rally 7th Overall, MSS Safety Mitsubishi Lancer EVO6 N4
The Adelaide was my first competitive event in almost 20 years and I hadn't driven the rally car at speed before the first stage.
Someone bought me a few laps at a rally school a few years back, and this refuelled my passion
Took a few stages to get going, my co-driver for this event, Anja Straus, kept us on track despite having some major issues our service crew were unable to fix, with the car not turning right.
We had to back off on right handers quite a bit, but still managed some reasonable times.
I am entering the AGL Rally of SA in the Mitsubishi which will be converted back to gravel spec for the event.
While I do prefer a recce and pace notes, I absolutely love blind rallies, especially on gravel, so I am keen to get going and show my speed on this event.
I especially love low light or dark events, my specialty.
The Fish is back!!!
