Regional Council of Goyder to host workshop

Statistics show women and children make up a large percentage of civilians killed in bushfires.

Often, they are the ones home with the children when a bushfire strikes, and needing to make the decision to stay and defend, or leave.

As a result, Regional Council of Goyder's Fire Prevention Officer, Lisa Jamieson wants to organise a Firey Women Workshop, to be held in Burra, in either March or April.

The award winning 'Firey Women' workshops, run by the CFS, provide women with a safe, non-threatening environment to learn skills, and assist them in taking important steps towards empowering and protecting themselves, their families and their community in the event of a bushfire.

These FREE two day workshops cover information and practical skills.

Please note, this is a two day workshop, so attendance is required on both days to achieve the full benefit.

Workshop topics include:

· Preparing yourself emotionally and physically for a bushfire

· Understanding bushfire behaviour

· Understanding Fire Danger Ratings and bushfire warnings

· Discussing the differences between a "leave early" and a "stay and defend" plan

· Preparing a Bushfire Survival kit and Plan

· Identifying hazards around the home

· Operating pumps and firefighting equipment

Lisa needs a minimum of 10 participants to make this happen, so please register your interest (and advise preferred workshop days) to: ljamieson@goyder.sa.gov.au or phone 88920100.
