Clare and Districts Apex Club opened its new shelter at Melrose Park on Saturday afternoon, just in time for use in the thunderstorm conditions.

A project to give back to the community, the shelter had been in the pipeline for some time and has now been officially opened for use.

Where a shelter once stood, now stands a brand new one, with barbecue cooking facilities and enough room to enjoy undercover outdoor usage.

It’s been an ongoing fundraising campaign for the club with many donating goods to be sold or raffled off to people.

Determination has seen the project completed. Clare and Districts Apex Club president Nedd Golding said this project was something they could all be proud of.

“This was something that was missing. It used to be here but was dilapidated and now it is back,” Mr Golding said.

In particular he thanked members Nathan Skinner, Mark Hendry and Mick Hean for their work towards the project.

The barbecue and shelter area was an idea that brought a couple of Clare clubs together, in particular Clare Valley Model Engineers and the Apexians.

This project saw the group receive a couple of grants, including one from Waterloo Windfarm and Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council.

It also received support from many businesses in the region giving donations of time and products and discounts on necessary items. “As the president, I just want to say well done to all of the members for their help,” Mr Golding said.

Businesses and individuals who helped out included: Greg Pulford, JC Gill, IKC, S.C. Heinrich and Co, Holcim, Earles Transport, Darren Stocker, Brad Charnstrom, Shaun Deal, Sanders H Hardware, Jim McDowell, Clare Valley Model Engineers, club members.
