Amelia Hocking, 15, of Burra, will go in for surgery to remove a rare pineal cyst in early December.

Thanks to a donation of more than $40,000 the funds have been raised for Amelia Hocking, of Burra, to allow her to have surgery on a rare pineal cyst.

Anndrea Hocking, Amelia’s mother, told Northern Argus the family had a surgery date booked in for early December.

“I think we cried for about two days (when we read the email),” Ms Hocking said. “I think I read the whole email about two hours later.”

The family, through donations, have been able to raise more than $100,000 to go towards the surgery, something Ms Hocking didn’t think would happen so quick – they started their campaign in July.

She said it was exciting and stressful all at the same time.

“We definitely did not think it would happen so soon,” Ms Hocking said.

“I’m really stressed about the surgery...her headaches are getting worse. She (Amelia) is counting the days to surgery.”

The family now has the money to allow Amelia to have the surgery, but a small amount more is needed to help with pre and post operative meetings – the costs are upwards of $700.

They also need to be in Sydney a few days prior and after the surgery and will be back there for a check up six weeks later. “We are still fundraising to help with the expenses.”

With the surgery just weeks away, Ms Hocking said it was important to keep Amelia as healthy as possible.

Ms Hocking said Amelia’s best friend Tia Raffan wanted to help and has organised a fundraising evening called “The Last Leg of the Race” for Friday, November 9.

To be held at the Burra Bowling Club the night begins at 5.30pm and costs $5 per player. No skills necessary. The family will also hold a garage sale on Saturday, November 10 from 9am – look for the signs in Burra.

“Amelia has already said her story is not over. We do not want anyone to go through what we have as a family.”
