It is a love story 72 years in the making for Skye Pearse and Kristian Budarick.
The Clare couple became engaged last month after re-igniting their high school flame about four years ago.
Ms Pearse said the pair met on Mr Budarick’s first day at Clare High School and asked him out almost immediately.
After dating briefly, Ms Pearse, in her own words, broke Mr Budarick’s 13 year-old heart via a sincere break-up letter. However they remained good friends in the years following.
It was not until love drew them back together 12 years later that the revelation that their grandparents had been friends way back in the day was revealed.
Ms Pearse’s grandmother Berryl had told her of the friendship not long after they had started dating again. Beryl produced photo evidence for Ms Pearse as an engagement present.
The photo depicts Ms Pearse’s great aunt Isabelle, great uncle Alan and Beryl, alongside Mr Budarick’s grand parents Barbra and Hilton in 1946. They were performing at a dance at the Watervale Town Hall.
Beryl was even a member of Barbra’s bridal party, showing just how strong the friendship was. Barbra and Hilton have unfortunately passed away since.
Ms Pearse said the revelation came as a shock.
“We had only just found out when we were dating a few years ago and then this popped up so it was very cute,” she said.
“Grandma told us one day and it was a shock, but we also thought it was cute and then just made a joke out of it.
“But I only saw (the picture) last week for an engagement present. It was a very special gift from Grandma, photo evidence that the Budarick and Pearse connection goes way back to 1946.”
The Pearse and Budarick families have been an integral part of the Clare Valley community for many years.
Beryl Pearse has an event at the Clare Motorcyle Club named after her, the Beryl Pearse Trial, and was also an Australia Day Citizen of the Year recipient in 2013.
Mr Budarick’s father Spencer also founded Clare business IKC Sheds in 1983 which supplies customers nation-wide.
Mr Budarick proposed to Ms Pearse in Hawaii on August 15. They plan to marry in 2020. Ms Pearse said she can’t wait to marry her best friend.
