Author Margie Koukourou visited the Riverton School Community Library on Sunday, August 5, to address a group of interested local residents about her memoir: Never Forget Australia: a Return to the Western Front.
In 1993, Margie was invited to accompany a group of World War I veterans and war widows on a trip to the battlefields of northern France, as a nurse and carer.
Her book is an account of that journey, and its many touching and uplifting moments.
She told moving stories of the veterans’ lives and their extraordinary experiences during World War I and she shared many of the special moments of the trip.
One of those stories was about the time when, at a memorial service at Villers-Bretonneux, an elderly French veteran crossed, with difficulty, from the area reserved for the French to the Australian area, so he could shake hands with one of the Diggers.
It was an absorbing afternoon. Lest we Forget.
