For the first time, a country district was allowed to enter into the Golf SA Women’s metropolitan pennants in the A2 Pike Cup.
It all started with Mid North committee member Lesley Montfort, speaking with the Golf SA competitions manager at an event in Adelaide last year.
Montfort inquired about the possibility of the Mid North joining the competition.
Golf SA asked the current affiliated metropolitan clubs if they would be interested in letting the club join, and they all voted in favour.
The ‘home club’ was nominated as Tanunda Pines.
Unfortunately, Mid North was unable to obtain players from Highercombe or Penfield, whose women are in the Mid North district, as they are categorised as City Clubs by Golf SA.
Although affiliated with Mid North; they could not represent the region in the competition.
So a team was assembled from the Mid North – Players were Sue Keylock, Sandy Francas, Helen Kelly (Sandy Creek), Reo Jenner, Julianne Smith, Michelle Pearson (Clare), Fiona Hockings (Barossa) and Sharyn Roberts (Burra). Team managers were Gloria Maynard (Clare) and Di Day (Burra).
Mid North V Grange at Flagstaff Hill – Lost 0-5
Mid North V Tea Tree Gully at Tanunda Pines – Won 3½ to 1½
Mid North V Glenelg at Tea Tree Gully – Won 3½ to 1½
Mid North V Kooyonga at The Grange – Match drawn 2½ to 2½
Mid North V Royal Adelaide at Royal Adelaide – Lost 4-1
Mid North V Flagstaff Hill at Kooyonga – Won 3½ to 1½
Finishing equal with Royal Adelaide, the team missed out on playing in the final, but only by points as the top two teams only could advance.
A great effort by the team for their first year in the metropolitan pennants.
The group is looking forward to playing in the competition next year, when the players will be more familiar with the process, and have now all played on the magnificent golf courses in Adelaide, which most of the team had never played on before this year’s comp.
