Former South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill broke his leg while bushwalking at Mt Remarkable over the weekend.

Mr Weatherill and his family were hiking through Hidden Gorge in the National Park when he fell and broke the bone in his lower right leg.

After a two-hour, up-hill climb on a stretcher, Mr Weatherill was transported to Port Pirie Hospital.

In a post on his Facebook page, Mr Weatherill was in good spirits despite his embarrassment.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to National Parks, SA Ambulance Service, SAPOL, Wilmington CFS, Booleroo Centre SES and Port Pirie Hospital,” he said.

“I want to thank them and everyone involved in my rescue and care.”
