As well as becoming Clare Stationmaster in 1925, William Mutton was the President of South Clare Football Club for two seasons in 1928 and 1929.
He was also a keen cricketer and a member of the Ramblers Cricket team.
William received a farewell dinner in the Clare Institute on December 16, 1929 at 8 pm. The dinner was hosted by the South Clare Football Club and railway employees.
At this dinner he was presented with a dinner set from Mr W. Dickenson, a travelling case from Mr Brooks and a set of cutlery by the Mayor of Clare, Mr A. J. Bowley.
He received a public farewell in the Clare Town Hall on December 23, 1929.
Quote from The Northern Argus, December 1929: Mr Mutton was a good servant of the Railways, most obliging and courteous in his treatment of the public, always ready to give information and did his job well.
Mr William James Mutton was transferred to North Adelaide Station.
