Clare kart racer Declan Coull has capped off a stellar season by taking out the Barossa Kart Club KA3 Junior Championship last Friday.

After an impressive trophy haul throughout the year, Declan was awarded the highly prized Gumnuts Future Star Award at the annual SA Karting Presentation Dinner on the same night.

The 14-year-old speed demon made the switch to KA3 halfway through the season after starting in the KA4 class below, making his win even more impressive.

Declan said receiving the two accolades capped off a stellar season.

“This Championship win was a complete and really does top off what has been a great year of racing,” Declan said.

“To then recieve the Gumnuts Future Star Award just blew me away, it really is a great honour.”

Declan returned to the track where he announced himself to the karting world on Friday.

Back in May, Declan burst on to the scene by placing sixth at the Clipsal 500 SA State Championship.

That race was his first ever in the KA3 class.

As well as competing in races in SA, Declan has also crossed the border on a number of occasions for meets in Victoria.

Declan said this experience put him in good stead for the future.

“I had not raced in South Australia until February this year and competing at tracks all over the state and Victoria throughout the year has given me the opporunity to expand both my driving experince and racecraft,” he said.

“I have been so busy learning new circuits and concentrating on winning as many races as possible throughout the year I had not thought about the Championship.

“I am stoked.”

Declan has been in red hot form all year with a number of podium finishes.

He took the number one spot on the podium on numerous occasions, and also finished in second and third place to boot.

The young driver said he could not have achieved what he has this year without the support of a number of people.

“I have been backed and supported by some fantastic people and if it was not for them I could not race, so I am doubly proud to have been awarded these trophies.

“It makes it all worthwhile.”

With aspirations to one day become a Formula 1 driver, Declan is certainly on the right path to making that become a reality.

He has already received interest from teams on the low end of the Formula Racing Pyramid from Forumal Three and Forumla Four teams.

The next step for Declan in his career would be to move away from Karts and step into the Circuit racing competitions.
