The Awards reward and recognise individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year, or who have given outstanding service over a number of years to a local community.

Along with the Citizen of the Year, two other award recipients will be announced in the Young Citizen of the Year category and the Community Event of the Year category.

Contribution to the community can come in areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, and the environment.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid has encouraged residents to nominate so more people can receive credit for their hard work.

“I know every community, every town, every school, every group in the region has somebody giving their time to help others – it would be great to see them nominated,” he said.

“We want to see the biggest pile of nominations ever this year – nominations from all parts of Wakefield."

The winners in each council region will be announced at next year’s Australia Day ceremonies.

Council’s can then forward the details of their award winners to the Australia Day Council of South Australia to go in the running for the state awards.

A state Citizen of the Year will be announced at a ceremony at Government House at a later date.
