Safety grants for regional SA

Funding for individual RAA Regional Safety Grants has doubled to a maximum $10,000 this financial year.

Applications for the sixth consecutive round of grants are open this month, and coincide with the beginning of the Fire Danger Season across much of the state.

Bushfire support for rural communities is an important issue for RAA Insurance and a number of community projects focused on bushfire preparedness and safety have received funding in previous years.

RAA communications account manager David Nankervis said the grants have supported 87 regional community groups since 2013, including those with a bushfire safety focus.

“RAA has been able to support many deserving projects over the years that have involved fire safety, road safety, security, medical equipment and children’s education,’’ Mr Nankervis said.

“This increased value for individual grants means RAA is better able to support bushfire prevention and safety initiatives, as well as other safety projects.

“Over $262,000 has been distributed to community projects from Streaky Bay to Naracoorte through previous grants and we have already had interest in the 2017-18 round.’’

Not-for-profit organisations, community groups, schools and registered charities with a project or activity that will improve safety in their local area can apply throughout November for grants ranging from $500 to $10,000.

“The aim of this program is to support those directly affected by the safety risks within their communities,’’ Mr Nankervis said.

“Last financial year we were able to help Springton CFS upgrade the spotlights on the brigade’s lighting truck and we also helped Hills Radio upgrade its equipment to provide the Adelaide Hills community with emergency services notifications via FM radio.

“Other important projects saw the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club purchase equipment to commence patrols for the first time and Angaston Primary School create a safe walking path to reduce students crossing at risky spots.’’

Applications for RAA Regional Safety Grants open Wednesday, November 1, and close at 5pm on Thursday, November 30.
