Heartbreaking loss for Under 15s

U15 Grand Final

Tanunda 6 defeated CDHA United 1

Goals Tanunda:- Tristan Pfeiffer 4, Sam Bentley 1, Jay Rice 1

CDHA United:- Nick Burfitt 1

This was going to be a hard task to break down the polished turf style that Tanunda play so well, going into the finals undefeated.  They say anything can happen in finals!  CDHA’s coaching tips were to play hard, show good sportsmanship and most of all have fun.  Tanunda won the toss and opted for the ball.  Both teams showing some nerves, CDHA were able to move the ball forward into attack, dictating the play for the first 8 minutes of the game.  Tanunda gathered their structure and turned this around continually keeping CDHA’s defence busy.  Thomas Lymburn held very strong in defence backed up by Will Thomas and nimble goalie James Cott.  Max Price held the centre well and continually put pressure on the mid field.  Krystal Landorf and Harrison Williams seemed to have an extra player to contend with due to Tanunda’s structure.  Tanunda were able to score off 2 short corners and a field goal in the first half.

Regrouping and encouraging for movement, being in front and leading into the second half saw some opportunities for CDHA.  They started with more spark, seeing a goal through the determination of Elizabeth Cornwell and Nick Burfitt deep in the circle – Nick with the final touch.  This was very quickly repaid by a field goal from Tanunda.  CDHA’s Nick Lawrie always working hard and continually getting in the way of Tanunda’s movement forward.  Owen Jenner making leads and his continual run was met by Tanunda’s defence making it hard to move forward.  Peter Smulders turned his defence into a wing staying close to the sideline and making some good runs.  Nick Burfitt roaming the middle in attack with some good opportunities but blocked by Tanunda’s defence.  Elizabeth Cornwell making great positioning out wide with Amber Prince also having a run on the wing for a while.  The second half CDHA created more attacking and movement forward with shots on goal but the ball would not go over the goal line.  Thomas Lymburn was unfortunate not to score; goalie on the ground, he scooped the ball over the goalie who just clipped the ball to deflect it over the sideline.  CDHA defence worked hard in this half seeing James Cott, goalie, getting plenty of action and doing some great saves.  Tanunda were just too strong and their continual formation of moving forward and some lovely stick work proved their worthiness of winning the premiership.  Max Price (CDHA) and Tristan Pfeiffer (Tanunda) were presented with Best on Ground for the grand final.  The U15 Barossa Valley Hockey Association Best and Fairest were presented after the grand final with Max Price and Thomas Lymburn scooping equal runner up for the Association and Tristan Pfeiffer from Tanunda taking out the Best and Fairest for the U15 competition – well done boys.

U15 CDHA team should be proud of their efforts for the season.  A big thank you to parents for giving their kids the opportunity to play this great Olympic sport.  To all the umpires, it is a thankless job but without you there is not a game and our associations & clubs for all the hard work behind the scenes.  Our papers for printing our write ups each week, our creative writers, Tanya Williams for collating reports and the great photos taken by Darryl Cott. Last but not least to the coach and team manager, Jayne Price and Paul Williams for being their every week encouraging and building on the U15 CDHA team.
