On Saturday Clare and Balaklava played their preliminary final. With a big crowed watching, there was bound to be some action and excitement. Both teams came out strong with some excellent defence from Balaklava which denied Clare on multiple opportunities. Some great attacking pressure from Balaklava resulted in a series of short corners which they were able to convert through Nick Lawrie. It was Clare’s turn with a short corner which resulted in a flick but unable to convert. The rest of the half was an even contest. Just before half time whistle Clare had a break with a power run from Deneke Donato who hit the post. The second half saw Clare come out hard but Balaklava managed to stop them from scoring. Balaklava played another short corner where Nick Lawrie had a great strike and managed to score the second and last goal for the game. A great game played by both teams. A great season Clare and all the best to Burra and Balaklava who play next week in the Finals for our U14 Comp.
Next week Burra hosts the U14s Grand Final which will be contested between Burra and Balaklava. U14 presentations will then follow immediately after the game. Good luck to both U14s team in the final – both teams have grown enormously since the start of the season. The super eager (and ever growing) group of U10s will then take the field for the last time this season afterwards which will then be followed by the U10s presentations for the 2017 season. The weather forecast is looking fantastic and we hope to see lots of supporters out cheering their teams on. Burra Hockey Club will be running their canteen throughout the morning also. Another reminder regarding the CDHA Presentation Dinner on 9th September. All RSVPs need to be in by 2nd September – please see your team/club representative for tickets this week.

Wikipedia quotes ‘Sportsmanship is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors’. What a lovely way to finish off the minor round to play Nuri who show great Sportsmanship. This team brings energy, fun and enjoyment with them which blends with the CDHA team perfectly. Both back on grass at Clare High School, wishing for the smoother surface - at least the bounce was unpredictable for both teams and the falls were soft, some seeing the ground more than others! CDHA had most of the play, persistently moving into attack. Nuri’s defence dug deep and held strong, continually stopping the ball deep in the circle. Star player was Nuri’s goalie Lily Melville who was pumped and did some brilliant saves. It seemed to be a game of short corner, block, short corner repeated 30 fold in CDHA’s favour with Nuri consistently stopping the goals. CDHA was able to capitalise on these twice in the second half through Naomi Tucker and Bri Cheetham. Naomi was able to sneak a field goal over the line in the first half with determination on the post. We all looked forward to the final whistle and both teams smiling to finish the fun spirited game. Sunday’s played game against AM United and Trinity was a decider of a very tight contested B grade table. Unfortunately CDHA finished in 5th sport, 1 point behind AMU which ends out season on a fun filled game. We wish all teams a good finals series … remember ‘Sportsmanship’ and without umpires there is no game … Respect Them even if you do not agree with their decision.
