Airport insights at Probus

The Clare Probus August meeting was opened by president Greta and after the National Anthem was sung, three new members were inducted.

The club welcomes Margaret and Gunther Bayha and Ramona Critchley.

Business was conducted and then fellowship was enjoyed over morning tea.

Guest speaker for the meeting was Brian Wheeler, who spoke about Adelaide Airport and his time working there.

Brian originally worked for the airport operator – Adelaide Airport Limited – as a safety and security officer.

This was an “airside” role working on the tarmac, runways and wider airfield.

An insight into the day to day responsibilities was given as well as a basic run down of operating in fog and with aircraft in other than normal operations.

Brian then moved into the terminal as part of the duty management team.

Some insight into daily activities in this environment was given – focusing more on the behind the scenes activities not usually seen by travellers.

To finish Brian was able to relay some of the activities of his third airport employment as a customs officer.

Brian’s unique knowledge in three separate airport-based positions made for an interesting perspective of airport activities.
