FRIGHTENING: Tahlia Smith now suffers from seizures.

A $10,000 piece of medical equipment designed to reduce seizures will soon be delivered to Lyme disease sufferer Tahlia Smith of Raworth.

Resonant Light Technology, a Canadian corporation, produced the equipment, which uses resonant light emission for the control of viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts and insects.

Miss Smith, 21, suffers relentless seizures because of her illness transmitted from the bite of a tick infected with the Borrelia bacterium.

East Maitland Rotary Club launched a project to help Miss Smith and collected $10,000 from generous community donations.

The club has set up a fund for Miss Smith and her family through Rotary Australia Benevolent Society and all donations are tax deductible.

“Miss Smith and her family do not receive medical or government support for costs associated with her illness, so our club has taken on the project to support them,” East Maitland Rotary Club project manager Chris Dorn said.

East Maitland Rotary Club will donate $1500 to the Smith family at the club’s meeting next Tuesday, August 4, at St Peter’s Hall, Banks Street, East Maitland at 6pm.

The money was collected in buckets at the gates of Maitland Markets.

“Tahlia’s battle with Lyme disease means her family is faced with excessive fees for medication, costing about $1000 per week,” club spokesman Geoff Hicks said.

Miss Smith was diagnosed with Lyme disease in January this year, along with the co-infections babesia and bartonella.

She lives with a swollen spinal cord, leg tremors, nausea, headaches, and body and joint pain, is sensitive to noise, needs ice packs to combat fevers and can become irritable.
