Despite cool and wintry conditions, riders and their mounts still turned out for Burra Pony Club’s Gymkhana.
Riders came from throughout Port Augusta, Burra, Clare, The Gums Horse and Pony Club and Belvidere to compete in encourage and open rings.
The gymkhana was back with full program of events following a few years off and riders were ready to put their skills on show for the judges.
Events in hacking ring range from best presented handy pony, bare saddle, hack and rider classes.
In the showjumping arena classes started from a pole on the ground up to one metre.
Burra Pony Club chief instructor Penny Maynard said it was brilliant to watch the riders gain confidence and move up the levels.
During the day, riders had the opportunity to compete in the barrel racing and the bounce pony.
Following the completion of hack ring events, novelties kicked off with a number of competitors taking the opportunity to have a go at a range of fun events – there was bending, can race, open team of three, musical mats, apple in a bucket.
The last event of the day was the eagerly anticipated fancy dress.
Ms Maynard said there was some creative costumes made.
“The judge had a very tough decision to make about the place-getters in that class. Congratulations to those riders,” Ms Maynard said.
“We were very lucky that the rain waited until we were finished before coming down.
