I am going to give it a red hot go and see what happens, you do not know unless you try. - Lyn Humphris

Jamestown’s Lyn Humphris is proving age is just a number as she picks up medals in triathlon events across the state, all at the age of 50.

She has picked up a swag of medals in just her fourth year of competition.

However, Humphris said she never expected to have such a successful career so early on.

“I just wanted to compete,” she said.

“I have that bit of competitiveness in me because I played sports over the years and I started off quite slowly.

“My very first one I had my old hybrid bike with the knobby tyres, it was pretty heavy and it was quite an awkward triathlon but I have learnt a lot since then.”

Last year Humphris took out the Dare 2 Tri Triathlon Series for the Challenge Distance event in the 45-49 years age group.

This year she picked up two medals in the Triathlon SA State Series and again in the Dare 2 Tri series in the 50-55 age group.

Humphris competed in six different races in the Dare 2 Tri series beginning in October last year and finishing earlier this year, in March.

She received 10 points in five out of the six races she competed in to comfortably claim the winner’s medal for her age group.

Now Humphris is eyeing off a chance to pull on the green and gold and represent Australia at the ITU World Triathlon grand final on the Gold Coast next year.

“I would like to try and qualify for the world competition representing Australia next year,” she said.

“There is about nine races you can compete in and they take your top three scores from the races you compete in, the top 20 in your age group will get to represent Australia next on the Gold Coast.”

The first step on the road to her qualification is rapidly approaching, with Humphris preparing to fly to Townsville for Tri Festival taking place over three days this weekend.
