Attending the public meeting at Hallett (February 19) regarding wind towers, I feel more comment is justified. Having now viewed aerial photos of the existing wind towers along the various range-tops, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the evidence of the dramatic and (in my opinion) devastating impact wind towers with their service roads and support installations have had on the environment, dramatic and destructive impact that is not seen by the general passer-by.
Also displayed at the meeting were photos of the natural environment where future towers are allegedly proposed in the Upper Mt Lofty Ranges near the township of Hallett and I cannot for the life of me understand anyone committing such natural and unique beauty (at Hallett or at any other location in SA) to such devastating impact.
The intrusion of these towers, with their constant and penetrating low-level noise pollution, upon the life-style of individuals and families living nearby, is also a topic that must be addressed with urgency and honesty on the part of all concerned.
If one were to take the destructive “dollar” and a huge helping of “political and industrial arrogance” out of the equation, perhaps progress could be realised in a more ecologically and socially friendly and responsible manner.
Question: Are the local councils/councillors and political representatives, who allow/condone such activity, acting in a rational and ecologically responsible way? We as South Australians don’t have the legal or justifiable right to rape the only environment we will ever have! Advancing technology is, on a day-by-day basis, forcing us to require and use more-and-more electricity, but technology is badly failing society in the responsible and intelligent provision of that electricity! Future generations have no choice but to bear the burden of today’s decision!
PS: Just recently Mr Rann, in print, proudly claimed that “there were now more wind-towers in SA than all the rest of Australia combined”, All this suggests to me is that “all the rest of Australia” are a lot smarter than South Australia.
