McCallum-city rocks Roos

02 Jul, 2008 12:19 PM
Another chapter was added to the colourful history of these two clubs on Saturday when bottom-placed Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington took on the reigning premiers in what had been billed before the contest as a one-sided Roo benefit.

Though by 5.15pm there was no doubt who won the day – Lions by 44-points in a massive upset that rocked the Roo camp no end.

BMW had seven McCallums in their side – four of them made the best players – so it was fitting that someone in the family kicked the first goal.

It was tall winger Nicholas McCallum who converted a big mark with a top kick from near the edge of the arc. Skipper Damien Smith – at full forward – was rewarded for some clever work with a set shot that had the flags out a few minutes later and Orroroo’s defence looked rattled.

Their forward line was unconvincing too, especially with BMW’s Kendrick McCallum, Dustin Berryman and Braden Battersby giving their direct opponents a fair old touch-up at the contests.

It was 15 minutes into the term before the red and black’s scored and that was after skipper Will Bennett toughed out a centre clearance and unloaded to Justin Duffy who picked out Jonathon ‘Biz’ Byerlee well inside range.

However, from the re-start the tri-colours ruthlessly set up Cameron McCallum for the first of his six for the day and even after Bennett snapped a classic goal in heavy traffic to keep the homeside in touch, it was Cam McCallum and Damien Smith who dominated inside 50 for BMW.

A set shot from the pocket gave the Camster his second and two goals in 90-seconds to Smith – both clever pot shots from in-close – put BMW on a roll.

The goal of the day came as the quarter time siren echoed across the ground. The six-pointer – kicked by Cameron McCallum - came after one of those forgettable defensive errors that allows an opposition forward to intercept the kickout after a behind was scored.

McCallum accepted the mark 20 metres out and zigzagged his way through traffic and just dropped the Sherrin onto his boot from about one metre out.

BMW was less impressive in the next two terms and scored just 2.3 in each session.

On the other hand Orroroo had plenty of the Sherrin but they were troubled inside their own 50 and they managed to score just 7.8 from more than 20 journeys inside the arc between quarter time and lemon time.

Down by 14-points and with their backs to the wall, the premiers were expecting to overhaul BMW but there was no way Andrew Milne’s charges were going to let this game slip.

A couple of early goals signalled the Lions intentions and the Roo’s were slowly but surely pushed off the ball as they became demoralised at the thought of losing to the bottom side.

Full credit to BMW who ran in 4.7 in a last quarter surge while the best Orroroo could do in reply was a mere behind.

BMW’s best were ruck rover Casey McCallum, Kendrick McCallum in the back pocket, Dylan McCallum across half forward, Cameron McCallum - with a match-high 6-5 from the forward pocket - and full back Dustin Berryman.

Damien Smith had a good game at full forward and finished with four goals. Several other players had some fine moments including Jordan Arthur and Kym Searle.

Best for Orroroo were harder to find though Liam O’Dea was pretty handy on his wing and skipper Will Bennett got a lot of it in the centre and finished with three goals. Damian Ellery in ruck, Tim Byerlee at centre half back and rover Brodie O’Dea made the list. Coach Justin Duffy and young centre half forward Jonathon Bowman kicked two each.
