Riverscape shines at Jamestown

09 Oct, 2008 09:23 AM
The 2008 XXXX Gold Jamestown Cup was run in perfect sunshine on a day that started out cold and overcast.

In the feature race a crowd of 1200 saw the Craig Stewart-owned and trained Riverscape defeat the well supported Bravely with the Orroroo-trained Alquodor in third place.

Riverscape ran the 1800m in 1.49.81 which was just outside the race record set in 2005 by the Ron Campbell trained Go Spider (1.49.50)

After the race, trainer Craig Stewart said he had returned to Jamestown with fond memories of Riverscape giving him his first winner at the northern track two years ago.

Jamestown Racing Club chairman Michael Noonan said the 2008 meeting presented a good turn about for the club following Equine Influenza last year which brought with it a number of restrictions for patrons.

Club secretary Keith Hope welcomed Thoroughbred Racing SA Chairman Phillip Bentley and his wife Margaret Wagstaff to Jamestown for the afternoon.

Mr Bentley commended the Jamestown Racing Club for putting on “a good show” and attracting so many younger patrons.

Riding honours for the day were shared by Jordan Mallyon and Michael Vassallo who both rode doubles. Jordan won the opening race on the Phillip Stokes trained Shiny Mighty and followed up with Fraacharm in the third race.

Shiny Mighty was Jordan’s first race win and the youngster is a nephew of former top Melbourne jockey Mick Mallyon.

Michael Vassallo won the second race with a brilliant ride on Circled and the XXXX Gold Jamestown Cup on Riverscape.

The second race was marred by Tiparaja dumping rider Samantha Rowley at the 100m post. Ambulance volunteers were quickly on the scene and transported Samantha to the Jamestown Hospital for tests before she was transferred to Adelaide later that night.

Keith Hope said the club was pleased to note a significant increase in betting turnover of $71,670 up from $46,390 from last year. The club was also pleased with an increase in turnover for totalisator betting up to $18,000 this year.

Jamestown Racing Club committee members will have to wait another day for their recent purchase Pelekunu Valley which finished fifth in the fourth race, was won by the outsider Dolphin Wave. The “Valley” appeared to be cruising at the top of the straight but found little in the run home.
