Records at Jamestown despite the cold

07 Oct, 2009 09:44 AM
The Jamestown Racing Club held another successful cup day on Saturday.

A record 1400 patrons braved the cold, wintry conditions to witness the six race card. In a thrilling finish the Strathalbyn-trained Eight Stitches won the main race, the XXXX Gold Jamestown Cup from another Strathalbyn trained galloper, Granzig, with Akhaton finishing third.

Hopes of a local victory with the well fancied Pelekunu Valley were dashed when the gelding took charge of his young rider and set the race up for the other runners. As a result he was a spent force on the home turn and faded to finish seventh.

Eight Stitches formed the centre ‘leg’ of a successive training treble by Trevor Day who also won with Circled and Tiparaja. The three winners were all ridden by Phillip Crich who had an outstanding day by also filling places in the first two events.

The Jamestown meeting also saw the debut of young riders Scott Westover and Krystal Bishop. Krystal had a memorable start to race riding when her mount Shorty’s Star bucked coming out of the gate and almost threw her off. To her credit she stayed with her mount, calming her and riding her to the finish much to the generous applause of the crowd. Of the debut riders, Scott Westover had the better of the duo in finishing second in the second race on Chickasan. Senior jockey David Tootell, who has ridden many times at Jamestown without success, finally broke his ‘drought’ at the track winning the opening two races on Lady Re Annan and Light The Knight.

Punters responded favourably to the Club’s move to attract a metropolitan bookmaker to the Jamestown races, by putting a record turnover through the betting ring. The $69,000 wagered was well up on the $53,000 put through the ring last year. The Club’s totalisator service was also well supported with a record turnover of $30,000 – almost double last year’s record $18,000. The combined bookmaker and tote betting turnover of just over $99,000 was also a club record.

The Jamestown Junior Cricket Club, which ran the sausage sizzle and BBQ, also attested to the size of the crowd by running out of food four times during the course of the day.

The new ‘head’ of Racing SA, Jim Watters, attended the meeting as guest of the racing club and presented trophies to the connections of the winning horse. At the conclusion of the presentations, Mr Watters assisted the club in honouring Michael Noonan and John Clarke with life memberships. Michael has been a committee member for 31 years having joined in 1978. He has been chairman for the past 13 years. John Clarke joined the Committee in 1982, ‘clocking up’ 27 years. John is also a past chairman holding the head position between 1991 and 1995. Both gentleman have given the club generous, unselfish service and are the epitome of volunteering in the community.

Marketing of the 2009 Jamestown Cup meeting was complimented by the Club’s new web site (www.jamestownracing.org.au) with many visitors accessing local information through that source. The club worked with Orroroo web designer Tim Froling over a number of weeks setting up the web site.
