Tigers show glimpses of their best

15 Jul, 2009 09:27 AM
To finish just 17 points in arrears of the ladder leaders at this stage of the season is no mean feat and although this was BMW’s fate at Wirrabara on Saturday, they should take plenty from the experience.

Southern Flinders on the other hand is continuing its march towards September action and the team showed glimpses of its best on this occasion.

Especially in the first half when they dominated every position on the ground except in ruck where Matt Keller succeeded in taking on Boylan and Janz.

BMW scored first through Jordan Arthur whose set shot into the wind from the pocket was a corker.

Southern Flinders answered when from the members wing Scott Brand unloaded a huge kick which was marked by Lucas Chapman in range.

Chapman scored again after new centre half forward Luke Copley set him up with a clever piece of work and at the 20-minute mark a beautiful left footer from Matt Woolford found its mark to see the Tigers leading 3.3 to 1.0.

A third major from Chapman and a head-turning bomb off one step in the centre of the ground from Cody Turner saw the home side take a 30-point lead into the first break.

The Tigers kicked another couple in the second term and BMW made three behinds out of a dozen or so decent trips into their forward 50 so the footy was hardly inspiring from either side.

After half time BMW came out a different side than the one that slinked into the rooms 20 minutes beforehand.

They went on to outscore Southern Flinders 7.9 to 4.4 in the second half only to fall three goals short of victory.

It was anything but a classic match between these two ardent rivals and already both camps are talking up round 16 when they meet again at Booleroo Centre.

Best for the Tigers were rover Joel Palmer, Scott Brand across half forward, centreman Matthew Woolford (two goals), Brett Ballantyne at half back, winger Cody Turner (two goals) and Lucas Chapman who top-scored with four goals from a pocket.

Luke Copley kicked two and showed plenty of promise for the future.

BMW’s best players began with Matt Keller in ruck and Corey Finlay on a wing.

On-balling pair Kendrick McCallum and Casey McCallum saw a bit of it and Cam Carling was a livewire in the backlines.
