Sportsfest a winner at Jamestown

It’s not every day you get the chance to play water polo or wheelchair basketball in Jamestown.

But that’s exactly what happened recently thanks to an initiative of Sport and Recreation students at Jamestown Community School.

Set the task of planning and undertaking an activity in event management, the five stage 2 students organized a Sportfest, an opportunity for students to participate in sports they would not normally have access to.

The day, organized in conjunction with the Office of Recreation and Sport, was attended by year 9 students from MNSEC (Mid North Secondary Schools Education Cluster).

As well as water polo and wheelchair basketball (Wheelie Net), students were able to participate in rock climbing, archery, pistol shooting, lawn bowls, hip hop dancing, table tennis and futsal (indoor soccer).

Eleven-year-old Connor Hogan gave an impressive freestyle display of his motorbike skills during the lunch break.

Guest speakers, former Australian Opals Basketball Coach Jan Stirling, and paralympian David Gould attended the day (David also running the Wheelie Net sessions).

Jan encouraged young people to get involved in the committees of the sports they are involved in.

“For activities to remain sustainable through to 2020, you’re going to have to pitch in and put your hand up for some leadership jobs,” Ms Stirling said.

“Use your skills, offer what ever you can contribute, the rewards for you and your club will be everlasting.”

The day was greatly assisted by involvement of Wheelie Net, Futsal SA, Outdoor Adventure Skills, Take the Floor, SA Water Polo, Bowls SA, Jamestown Pistol Club, and Archery SA, and Table Tennis SA.

Sport and Recreation teacher Darren Woolford said the day was a huge success.

“The bulk of the credit for the success of the day must go to the five students for their hard work,” Mr Woolford said.
