 Roosters take the points

Roosters take the points

03 Jun, 2009 09:45 AM
The reigning premiers were keen to perform up to scratch in front of a large home crowd which included many past players and their families enjoying the Roosters reunion weekend.

And so it was no surprise to see the red and whites set up a winning score from early on.

With barely four minutes on the clock Daniel Hill goaled off a sensational snap from the silo pocket and shortly after Adam Noonan gave one a ride from the outer wing which also had the flags out.

Winger Chris Stringer seemed to have his own ball and centreman Luke Kapitola was keen to share it with him and it was only a couple of minutes before Shane Arbon – in game number 201 – was set up for a mark well inside 50.

The conversion was only a minor score prompting Arbon to gather a second possession in as many minutes and this one he handed off to Josh ‘Tacker’ Gale whose snap through heavy traffic was worth six points.

From the bounce it was the Arbon/Gale combo that scored again and Gale kicked his third minutes later while a stunned Jamestown-Peterborough defence looked on in awe.

By the 20-minute mark it was five goals to zip and the Pies seemed rattled, but they took heart from a booming set shot by David Boulton that opened their account.

It is probably fair to say Crystal Brook went out to lunch at this point and the visitors took advantage.

Chris Stacey and Dan Schuppan used the ball wisely and Ryan Simpson had some important touches, including a bomb to the goal square where Clayton ‘Hoover’ Pycroft grabbed a contested mark and kicked truly from point blank range.

Greg Farr kicked his first for the day right on the siren to send the Maggies into quarter time trailing by just 13-points.

A master-stroke from the Crystal Brook bench was to move Matt Jackman onto Greg Farr after the Jamestown champion booted three early goals on fourth-gamer Nathan Lambert, who was a bit overwhelmed.

It worked a treat because the way Farr opened he could have kicked bag.

Also denting Jamestown-Peterborough’s chances of staging an upset was when fullback Daniel ‘Spanner Kitschke’ rolled an ankle and came off early in second quarter.

That allowed young Daniel Hill to get a bit more of it at full forward where he ended up with four goals.

The crowd nodded off in the third quarter while Crystal Brook kicked 1.5 and Jamestown-Peterborough 0.3 but it all sparked up again in the last quarter when the red and white’s kicked five and the black and white’s four.

Crystal Brook’s best were Adam Noonan in ruck, Luke Kapitola, Matt Jackman, Matt Gale on a wing and forward pocket Shane Arbon.

Four goals each to Hill and Tacker Gale and three to centre half forward Leigh Williamson added a touch of class to the match.

Best for Jamestown-Peterborough were half back Matt Hale, Schuppan, Stacey, Scott Clark across half back and Hamish Tonkin who played his best game this year. Bernie Kelly kicked two.
