Roos at last - by two points

Roos at last - by two points

01 Jul, 2009 09:44 AM
This game had all the elements of some of the major round thrillers these two clubs have fought out over the years and perhaps a draw would have been more fitting.

But Orroroo didn’t see it that way and the two-point victory enabled them to snap a record 16-game losing streak that has haunted the red and blacks since the middle of last year.

Though it was a game of attrition and Orroroo finished off with no one left on the bench. Coach Justin Duffy said the key to the long awaited win was their third quarter effort.

“Dylan Warren kicked three goals in that quarter but all the young blokes played well all day,” he said. “Everyone contributed – like every player did their bit and we haven’t been doing that for a long time.”

Ruckman Josh Byerlee headed Orroroo’s best players with Dylan Warren who kicked four goals after starting on the wing and finishing in the forward pocket, Cody Hounsell at fullback, ruck rover Jon Byerlee, and veteran rover Keith Slade.

Duffy kicked three goals at full forward and there were two each to Luke Ellery, Gavin Laskey and Kirwen Moore. Will Bennett had a good game on the ball and Ryan Finn in the centre was noticed quite a bit.

Broughton-Mundoora coach Marcus Stutley took it pretty well considering premiership points will soon become priceless. “Our desire for the footy was way down and we couldn’t bury them,” he said. “They (Orroroo) hung on and they played a very good third quarter and we played ordinary and to their credit they played well and they looked good, so yeah, it was all credit to them.”

Broughton-Mundoora’s best was a toss up between roving pair Aaron Barclay (three goals) and Thomas Button (2). Simon Jamieson was good across half forward, Josh McCallum started at half back but went into ruck and worked hard in the last quarter when he nearly turned the game while Blake Stringer played his best game on the wing in four or five weeks. Justin Tiller had a dip on the ball and when shunted down to a half back flank.
