Entries up at Jamestown

26 Mar, 2008 08:53 AM
Entry numbers were up on last year at the Jamestown Easter Tennis Tournament, with 188 players battling it out on 12 lawn courts and 14 hard courts across the four-day event.

Competitors travelled from the Northern Territory, Victoria, Adelaide, Roxby Downs, Whyalla and across the Mid North to join the local players in the tournament.

The lawn courts were in excellent condition despite the dry season and tournament referee Jari Karvonen said that was largely thanks to a new water conditioning machine.

“Through fundraising from the Great Debate event held in Adelaide we were able to buy a water conditioning machine which has allowed us to water the courts with bore water,” he said.

“With the season so dry it’s amazing how good the courts are looking.”

Adam Alessandrini defeated James Hunter 9/1 to win the Men’s Championship Singles final for the second year in a row.

Taking out the Women’s Championship Singles final was Belinda Wade, defeating Kate Fitzgerald 9/4.

Kate went on to win the Women’s Championship Doubles however, with mum Bronny Fitzgerald, beating Louise Woolford and Rachel Gray 9/2.

The Men’s Championship Doubles was won by Adam Alessandrini and local Chris Stacey, defeating Andrew Brewster and Roger Davey 9/5.

Other highlights of the tournament included ‘beach cricket’ played on the lawn courts under lights on Easter Saturday evening, as well as a dinner and quiz night on Sunday.

Mr Karvonen said there was some excellent tennis played from under 12s right through to veterans and credited the success of the tournament to the lawn courts, the facilities and the organisation.

“The weather has been perfect, everything has run on time, the player behaviour has been exemplary and we’ve had good feedback from our first time players,” he said.

“We’re the largest Easter tennis tournament in the Mid North and being a computer assisted tournament it helps everything run smoothly.”
