Crystal Brook’s premiership defence took a dive at Jamestown on Saturday by failing to score in the opening term of the preliminary final.
And for the second week in a row the Roosters failed to kick 10 goals in four quarters of football.
After quarter time the reigning premiers outscored Broughton-Mundoora and gave themselves every chance to snatch victory in a dramatic last quarter by kicking 3.3 to just two behinds, but now their season is over.
The game opened at a furious pace and it was the Eagles who did all the attacking, though for the first 13 minutes of the contest it was just a battle of the defences.
But once the flood gates opened there was no stopping Broughton-Mundoora. Star-class winger Ben O’Donohue pinged the first goal and Josh O’Donohue the second one a minute or two later.
Mark ‘Jack’ Horner gave the crowd something to roar about when he launched a massive kick from the Bay 13 tinny bar flank and kicked his second soon after when Andrew Wilson cleverly spotted him up from centre half forward.
Crystal Brook went inside their own 50 about a dozen times but Broughton-Mundoora’s back six - particularly Justin Tiller - were way too good and at quarter time the Eagles led 4.4 to 0.2.
Rooster coach Robin O’Dea gave his players the message during the break while the bench plotted the moves on the magnetic board. It all worked and pretty soon Luke Kapitola opened their account with a fine goal. By half time they had four on the board, but it wasn’t enough.
Broughton-Mundoora played better, cleaner football and even though the Eagles wasted a few chances inside their own 50 – and could have been eight or nine goals ahead – they never lost their grip on the game and ran out eight-point winners.
Broughton-Mundoora’s best players list was headed by Mark Horner who shared top billing with three goals.
His game forward of centre was electric in view of the fact he came under quite a bit of scrutiny from opposition players during the day.
Tiller had plenty of it, Luke Shane was good across half forward and Andrew Wilson was very dangerous off his wing.
Two goals to Ben O’Donohue and three to Chris Elliott saw them make the list. Leigh O’Donohue in the centre and ruck rover Nick Hewett were serviceable while Brady Puddy and Josh O’Donohue had their moments.
Youngster Nick Joyce topped Crystal Brook’s best after a gutsy effort coming off a wing. Adam Noonan won the ruck hands down and rover Joel Millard was very competitive.
Dan Nicholson was fairly lively in the back pocket and skipper Matty Coates played well at centre half back. Two goals each to Josh Gale and Keegan Brinkley rate a mention.
