The Eagles slipped into gear from the opening bounce at Port Broughton on Saturday, leaving Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington in their wake.
Leading at every break, they ran across the line 33-point winners in only their second win at the ground for the year and their second win over BMW in five outings. It was nothing short of a brilliant performance by Broughton-Mundoora and one that will give the team enormous confidence going into its next game in two weeks time at Victoria Park.
The breeze varied from nothing to a genuine three-goal gust going south.
The local side had it first up and just 60 seconds into the term Chris Elliott opened their account with a regulation mark and goal well inside 50.
Then after some early argy bargy and a bit of crowd-pleasing sabre rattling all hell broke loose as the blue and golds completely dominated from the centre square to their forward lines and it rained goals.
Two to Mark Horner - including one from along the outer wing – and brilliant snap shots from Ben O’Donohue and Daniel Baker.
Not to be left out, rising star Tom Button goaled in the face of a disinterested defence and Elliott kicked a couple more though he seemed to have no further influence on the game. Goals to Andrew Milne and Matt Foulis saved the tri-colours from being whitewashed for the term but they trailed by six goals and were left to chase guernseys for the remainder of the match.
They staged a comeback after lemon time and kicked two goals in the first few minutes of the last quarter to give them some hope.
But Broughton-Mundoora regained control in the second half of the term and the ball spent a fair bit of time inside their own 50, where despite having several shots at goal they had to settle for 1.3. It did not really matter much because the Eagles were never going to lose it.
They won more of the ball and they controlled it better to their own advantage.
They showed no signs of stage fright in the pressure cooker atmosphere of a sudden death final while the Lions seemed off their game, they lacked cohesion and paid the price.
Best for Broughton-Mundoora was ruck rover Nick Hewett who dominated around the ground and was deservedly named BOG.
Mark Horner off a flank was very good around the stoppages and key defender Ash Dearlove cut off a lot of BMW’s forward drives before going onto Andrew ‘Dougal’ Milne later in the game.
Ruckman Dylan ‘Shrek’ George was easily the best big man on the ground and Luke Shane played a biggie after starting at half forward and going to centre half back in the last quarter.
Chris Elliott top-scored with three goals and there were two each to Baker, Horner, Button and Josh O’Donohue.
BMW’s best were Shannon Larwood on a wing, Kendrick McCallum who started at centre half forward but moved around a bit, Casey McCallum on the ball, half back Corey Finlay, and Todd Carey who came off the bench to fill gaps. There were two goals each to Cam McCallum, Milne, K McCallum and Matty Foulis.
