Brinkworth/Spalding/Redhill will have a keen young team running around the park in 2010 with the players they’ve blooded through the ranks itching at the bit to play at the highest level for their club.
The Tigers began their rebuilding campaign a couple of years ago and they’ve been around the mark early in a number of games of footy before dropping off late in the contests but they are on the up.
2009 wasn’t the greatest year for the club at the highest level with the ‘A’ Grade only winning one game to finish on the bottom of the Premiership ladder but the B Grade and the under-17s participated in the Grand-Final while the under-14s played in the first semi-final.
Newly elected president Frank Hayes said his club wants to continue developing the young players and to win more games of football.
“We want to develop our young side, to develop our young side to win more games. Obviously we’re going to try and bolster our team up with some recruiting that we’ve done and to win more games than we did last year. We’ve got some good under-17s coming up and we’ve picked up Jason Zohs from Lucindale, Michael Wright from Solomontown and Leigh Fuller returns to the Tigers after a four-year absence. Simon Hayes will also be back at the club after having a year off with a back injury.” said the President.
Joining Hayes on the committee is Peter Meyer as vice-president, secretary is Nick Burford and Darren Longbottom is the Treasurer. The remainder of the committee is Geoff Matters, Joe Fahey, Gavin Malycha, Jason Longbottom, Wayne Weckert, Craig Weckert, Andrew Goss, Greg Hayes, Richard Burgess and Phil Wilsdon.
BSR are having a club day on the 14th of March with the entire club training on the Sunday afternoon followed by a steak and salad dinner and the club will also be holding the colts medal presentation. The players auction will be held on April 24 after the home game at Spalding. Ray White has once again come on board as the major sponsor of the Tigers.
Coaches for 2010 at Tigerland haven’t changed with Brian (Butch) Smith the head coach, Adam Moller is looking after the ‘B’ Grade, Peter Meyer the under-17s and Wayne Lee will guide the under-14s.
A Grade coach Butch Smith told the Northern Argus he wants to win more games than last year but more importantly to be competitive in all games they play.
“Obviously we want to win more games than we did last year but we still need to be competitive in all our games. The end result is the end result but we’re still aiming to be more competitive in all the games and if we can achieve that we’ll win more games. At times we were in the game last year but we just let ourselves fall away, not all games we were beaten by the opposition but I think at times we beat ourselves,” said Smith.
The Tigers have been on the track for the past five weeks with between 25 and 30 players rocking up to put in the hard yards. BSR front up against Lions in a trial game at Pt. Pirie on March 27 followed by a trial against Ports at Spalding on April 10.
