Warm welcome for Crows star

23 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
Adelaide Crows football star Andrew McLeod visited North Clare Football Club last Wednesday (December 16) as part of a prize won by young footballer Sam McLeod.

Known as the Toyota Good for Country Footy competition, it is for junior footballers under the age of 14 and the entry requirements only need a footballer to fill out a form and drop it in to their local Toyota dealership.

The winners are randomly drawn and through his willingness to enter Sam won the North Clare junior football club $5000 and a visit from Andrew McLeod.

Although the day was hot and reached a maximum of 37 degrees Celsius, the hottest day Clare has had in December according to the Bureau of Meteorology, it didn’t stop keen footballers from getting out there and having a go.

More than 30 children turned out for the day including a few girls, who had to be part of the action and didn’t want to miss a chance to learn some tricks with Andrew McLeod.

Andrew took the children through an hour of training, and included drills from dodging balls, quick handballs to defending the ball.

All drills were a modified version of what the Crows do at training, to give the children a feel for what happens.

Once Andrew had finished the training session with the children, they all enjoyed a soft drink and could ask Andrew questions including was his favourite coach, how many goals he has kicked and whether he had been reported.

Sam was presented with the $5000 cheque from Tom Redden at Clare Valley Toyota that will go to the North Clare Junior football program.
