Competing in school-based athletics is always plenty of fun, but being selected in the state team is a huge achievement.
Jasmine Rokov-Underdown competed in the 2009 SAPSSASA Country Athletics Championships at Santos Stadium in Adelaide in high jump and long jump.
Against students from throughout regional South Australia, Jasmine won gold in the 12-year-old girls high jump competition.
“The city students do theirs together and us country students do ours separately, so once it had finished mum and I got on the internet to see how I went against all and I actually was the highest jumper overall from country and city,” Jasmine said.
Jasmine beat her personal best of 1.40 metres (obtained at Burra) and pushed it up to 1.45 metres and was successful in being selected in the state team to compete in Sydney on November 29.
“It was my first time competing in SAPSSASA athletics and I was quite surprised I made it, I only cleared the jump by a little bit,” Jasmine said.
Jasmine was part of Little Athletics in Clare, and plays various sports throughout the year.
“She really hasn’t had much training, but she did well against the others,” her mum Christina Underdown said.
Jasmine and her mum are asking for sponsorship to help get her to Sydney for the four days (from November 29 to December 2).
“It will cost about $1200 to get just Jasmine over there, and I think a lot of the cost is the fees, as while over there she will be competing at Olympic Park,” Christina said.
Jasmine will train every Saturday at SANTOS stadium from 9am until noon until she heads to Sydney for the big event.
If you are interested in sponsoring Jasmine on her trip to Sydney call her dad Mark on 0419 804 340.
