Young and not-so-young join in show of art

21 Oct, 2009 10:06 AM
Accomplished artists and admirers made up a crowd of nearly 100 at Scarlattis Gallery at Mt Surmon Wines on Sunday, October 18, for a show of art as a local contribution to the Every Generation Festival.

From Riverton High School art student Jake Bezzina, 16, to Gerald Moore, 76, of Auburn, and the Watervale Primary School children who showed their innovative windmural outside the gallery, it was a great tribute by one generation to the other.

The exhibition was mounted by University of the Third Age (U3A) Lower North as its involvement in the Statewide festival organised by the Council of the Ageing.

Most of the works on show at Scarlattis until November 8 are by talented students of Gerald Moore’s U3A pastel art class.

Gerald has hung only one work in order to highlight his students’ work. Jake Bezzina is showing three works that exhibit early talent by this young student. His school art teacher is James Butler and he attends evening classes with Roland Weight whom Jake regards as his mentor.

Gerald Moore described Jake as “the most promising student of Roland Weight”. About U3A classes, he said “we have great fun....but none happier that the students of the pastel art class”.

The exhibition was to have been officially opened last Sunday by the Federal Member for Grey, Rowan Ramsey, but because of an urgent summons of all MPs to Canberra to discuss the Emissions Trading Scheme, his wife Teresa stood in for him. She was introduced by U3A president Malcolm Weddle.

An art teacher herself, Mrs Ramsey described Scarlattis as an “awe-inspiring: gallery” with the works presented beautifully.

The Every Generation art exhibition at Scarlattis will be open for public viewing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm until Sunday, November 8. Information on U3A Lower North courses is available at www.freewebs.com/u3alowernorth or from course co-ordinator Val Tilbrook 0448 183 748.
