Teacher receives Peterborough Citizen of Year Award

03 Feb, 2010 11:48 AM
It was a time to celebrate a year of achievements for the residents of Peterborough and Districts when they gathered in their town hall for a traditional Australia Day Breakfast.

The past year has been filled with celebrations from the swimming pool’s 50th anniversary to the unveiling of the Bob the Dog sculpture and myriad events in between.

Communities “make” events and the breakfast was a grand chance to thank hard working residents for their dedication through the presentation of Australia Day Awards and certificates to all nominees.

The health and vibrancy of the community was illustrated by having six nominees in the Citizen of the Year category: Henry Crossley, Janet Fielding, Kenny Krueger, Mary Martin, Anne McKay and Heather Parker.

The winner was Henry Crossley who has been teaching at Peterborough High School since 1977 and has been a State finalist for National Excellence in Teaching awards. As well as his dedication to his students, Mr Crossley has been involved in the sporting life of the town over 25 years.

In 2005, he was selected to represent Australia in the World Pony Carriage Driving Championships in the UK and he has been instrumental in relocating the Gawler Carriage Driving Association to Peterborough and developing carriage-driving events for the town.

There were two nominations for Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year, Lucy Mercer and Kyle Slattery, with the award going to Lucy Mercer.

Lucy has always been active in her school community, serving on the Primary School and High School Student Representative council and representing her school in various ways.

She has been active in local sports, encouraging and supporting junior players and has been a member of the Callisthenics Association for more than 10 years and has taken on responsibility as an assistant instructor.

Lucy spent many years involved in Vacswim and assists instructors with junior levels.

Community Events of the Year nominations were for the State Carriage Driving Championships and the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre Opening Weekend, which won the award.

The Steamtown committee organised a weekend of celebration on November 27, which was the culmination of six years of negotiations with State and Federal governments for the development of the Steamtown Heritage Rail Museum.

The committee raised $1.5 million, through grants, rationalising rolling stock, sale of some major assets and salvage of railway track, to upgrade Steamtown into a world class heritage Rail museum.

It was estimated that about 2000 people visited Steamtown and Peterborough for the weekend and accommodation was booked out for 100kms.

A special appreciation award was given to Judith Evans for her work with TAFE over many years, in particular the dedication she has shown and continues to show for her students.
