Long-term flooding issues at Gladstone are being addressed with ground works now completed.
Northern Areas Council has constructed a diversion drain north of the town to channel excess flood waters into Pissant Creek and away from newly developing growth areas.
The diversion drain was undertaken as a result of a Northern Areas Council initiative to conduct a flood study of Gladstone in 2003/2004.
Northern Areas Council acted on recommendations put forward by consultants GHD, to direct excess water into Pissant Creek. Once water is directed into Pissant Creek it will flow to the southern end of the town to be consolidated with water reuse generated through the town’s Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS).
Cr Alan Woolford, Chairman of Northern Areas Council said “The drainage works will assist in periods of heavy rainfall when water previously flooded in from the north of the town inundating the eastern half of the township”.
Council received $130,000 through the State Government’s Stormwater Management Board towards the Gladstone Flood Mitigation project. Council matched State Government funding, and the total cost of the project is estimated at $260,000.
“This is one of many flood mitigation projects being progressed by Northern Areas Council across a number of communities within the Council area” said Cr Woolford.
