Freak storm wreaks havoc across Mid North

Wild weather wrecked havoc across the Mid North yesterday with damaging winds bringing down trees sending local emergency volunteers and council staff in to a flurry.

Clare seemed to be in a pocket and avoided the worst of the rain, but the wind kept clean-up crews busy at Clare Oval in front of the Valleys Lifestyle Centre.

A tree considered to be healthy was uprooted by a wild gust of wind that blasted through Clare.

The tree fell and took branches from another in front of it, severely damaging one car while three others sustained minor damage.

Fortunately no-one was in the vicinity at the time and no injuries were reported. The tree fell just before the changeover of aquatic classes at the Valleys Lifestyle Centre, where 10 to 12 children along with their parents were coming and going.

The owner of the damaged car, Simone Lawry, said she had just prepared her two children to begin their aquatic lesson when she was told about the damage.

“We are very thankful we weren’t in the car. We only just got it back from the crash repairers on Friday,” she said.

Ms Lawry said she normally parked on the eastern side of the centre but chose to park on the western side yesterday due to the likelihood of rain.

Chris Sullivan, from the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, said all outdoor crews had been called in to help with the clean-up.

“The trees that are still here have been identified as healthy and that’s why they haven’t been knocked down but in freak weather any could go, whether they are healthy or not,” Valleys Lifestyle Centre manager Andrew Waters said. His car was lucky to escape damage.

Country Fire Service and State Emergency Service crews throughout the Mid North were kept busy as a result of the storm, with trees falling under the pressure of high winds.

Other trees fell in Clare on Neagles Rock Road and Quarry Rd and Saddleworth Primary School was also hard hit by the storm.

ETSA Utilities crews were busy responding to power outages, which affected several areas of the Mid North including Burra.
