Clare fire contained

10 Feb, 2010 09:45 AM
A grass fire at Clare’s northern entrance was quickly contained yesterday morning.

The fire started at about 11.30am and a quick response from the CFS meant the fire across the road from Bridgestone Tyre Centre (just north of Clare) was contained quickly and efficiently.

“I just ran over there, to the power pole and tried to put it out,” Earles Transport employee Norm Fry said.

Three fire units along with one farm unit were in attendance to put out the fire which could have threatened properties and lives, if the weather conditions had been more severe.

Senior Constable Todd Wierenga said it appeared the fire had been started by transformer on a power pole in the paddock, but the cause was yet to be determined.

The fire burnt about one hectare of grass that was previously a vineyard and didn’t damage any property.

A Clare CFS appliance puts out the fire yesterday. The CFS units remained until their tanks were empty – making sure the ground was wet to minimise the possibility of re-ignition.
