CJ Dennis Awards presented at Auburn

10 Sep, 2008 11:51 AM
Another successful CJ Dennis Literary Awards event saw 644 excellent entries from schools throughout South Australia.

Posters from local primary schools were on display carrying the theme of “One World, One Dream”, with the winner of the poster competition being Ashley Allen (year 6) Riverton Primary School. Ashley’s poster was used to promote the awards.

The prize ceremony was held in Auburn on Sunday (CJ Dennis’ birthday) and began with a five-minute video of Max Fatchen speaking to the audience.

The tape was made the previous week when awards coordinator Peter Lane visited him at his home where he signed 41 certificates for the winners.

Max Fatchen Literary Awards judge Dr Carl Belle said entires this year were of a particularly high quality in all divisions, and judging had not been easy.

“The secondary entries included some of the finest poems I have ever received, and both the winning entries in this category are of exceptional standard,” Dr Belle said.

He again congratulated Watervale Primary, Grange School and Magill Junior Primary on the consistently high quality of their entries.

The judges for the CJ Dennis Literary Awards this year were poet Jude Aquilina (for poetry) and author David Mercer (for short stories).

“The sponsors again this year have been very supportive as over the past few years and I would like to acknowledge their continued support because without it we could not run the literary awards at all,” Mr Lane said.

“The sponsors are Taylors Wines, Mount Horrocks Wines and Grosset Wines, all local industries in and around the township of Auburn.”
