The Royal Flying Doctor Service Jamestown and District Support Group’s first official fundraiser on Saturday night was a terrific success, raising substantial funds for the RFDS.
More than 170 people attended the black-tie function which featured a four-course meal, a silent auction, and entertainment by Danny Hooper of Clare and Emily Zanker of Jamestown, as well as comedian Des Dowling of Melbourne.
So strong was the support for the function, the night sold out without advertising, according to the support group’s secretary Gill Redden.
“It was a very popular idea, we didn’t even have to advertise. We had tremendous support from people from Jamestown and surrounding districts as well as from Adelaide,” Mrs Redden said.
“We are over the moon with the success of the first function.”
She paid special thanks to major sponsors of the event: Julianne and Anthony Smith, Rawnsley Park Eco Villas, Peter Lehmann Wines, Grant Burge Wines, Helen Pammenter, Coopers Brewery, Bundaleer Wines, Annie’s Lane, Michael and Tessa Wake, Ramco Wine Group, and Malcolm Axford “Hostel 109”.
“The support from many local businesses was outstanding and helped contribute to a successful event,” she said.
Jamestown and Districts RFDS Support Group president John Batten said the group was keen to expand its supporter base. Membership for the 2009/10 year is $10 per person.
“There is no obligation to do anything, but people can be involved at the committee level or do as much as suits the individual. A core group of helpers are always necessary and a great assistance to us,” Mr Batten said.
The group’s AGM will be held in late July or early August. “As a member of this group, you will get advance notice of upcoming events and any other RFDS events,” Mr Batten said.
“We intend having quarterly Sunday barbecues at the Sir Hubert Wilkins aerodrome and on occasions there will be guest speakers.”
Mr Batten said membership supported the tremendous work of the RFDS.
“Each new Pilatus aeroplane costs $6 million when fully equipped and this is a cost RFDS bears itself (the government pays the running costs).”
The group is planning further fundraising events.
